Draft Program Overview

Year 1: 2025–2026

Establish Organizational Structure

  1. Form Utah High School Ski Racing as a state and federal 501(c)(3).
  2. Build a governing framework, bylaws, and a volunteer leadership model aligned with the Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles.

Build Communication Platforms

  1. Launch website and social channels to communicate league Vision, Mission, Guiding Principles, and ongoing updates.
  2. Centralize program information, including registration, announcements, rules, safety documents, forms, and fee structures.

Launch Initial Programs & Events

  1. Host 2–4 Utah High School Ski Racing events at UOP? and Sundance.
  2. Provide league-supported race-day training at each event.
  3. Encourage supplemental non-league training through NASTAR, Sundance Soda League, and independent practice.
  4. Begin shaping a recognizable league identity (branding, community tone, sportsmanship tied to V/M/GP).

Foundation Set-Up (with volunteer expertise)

  1. Build core policies, safety framework, and required documentation (eligibility, gear guidelines, competition windows, waivers, medical/safety forms, volunteer standards, insurance).
  2. Establish foundational competition systems (points, timing, start orders, officiating standards, equipment needs).
  3. Conduct outreach to coaches, resorts, UOP, school districts, high schools, and ski industry partners.
  4. Develop a volunteer structure with clear roles, support teams, and race-day staffing pools.
  5. Outline early regional/club structure with parent/coach leaders, communication channels, and league-vs-club responsibilities.
  6. Explore expanded on-snow training opportunities with certified race coaches; begin evaluating a student ski-pass partnership program offering discounted weekday/afternoon/evening access and NASTAR availability.
  7. Begin fundraising groundwork (initial events, small fundraisers, donor-base development), cultivate early sponsor partnerships (resorts, outdoor brands, equipment manufacturers), and explore grant opportunities.

Year 2: 2026–2027

Expand Competitive Opportunities

  1. Host 3–5 races with broader participation across regions and multiple host sites.
  2. Host the first Utah High School State Championship.
  3. Continue strengthening competition quality while prioritizing safety, inclusion, and affordability.

Begin Region/Club Program Structure

  1. Formalize regional club groupings with structured training, consistent communication systems, parent leadership, and coordinated on- and off-snow training opportunities.
    1. Student-athletes train within regional groups while competing for their high-school club at league races; as the program grows, consider transitioning to school-specific training models, drawing from Utah MTB and other state high-school ski programs.
  2. Support student-led high-school club establishment and recruiting.
  3. Build and utilize a reliable pool of certified race coaches for on-snow training.

Continue Strengthening Foundation

  1. Reinforce and advance all foundational pillars established in Year 1.
  2. Improve marketing efforts to increase student participation at all skill levels and encourage parent volunteer engagement at the regional/club level.

Years 3 and Beyond — Areas to Begin Focusing On

(Growth opportunities, future directions, and strategic ideas rather than commitments)

Program Expansion

  1. Send a strong team of athletes to the Western High School Championships
  2. Expand statewide participation and enhance event management and club operations.
  3. Continue strengthening race quality, coaching depth, technical standards, and consistency across regions.
  4. Explore establishing a board of directors, regional leadership teams, and succession planning.
  5. Evaluate long-term staffing models (paid vs. volunteer), referencing successes such as Utah MTB/NICA.
  6. Maintain strong alignment with the Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles.
  7. Consider expanded coaching workshops for parents, volunteers, and aspiring coaches.
  8. Explore hosting regular fundraising events to support scholarships, gear programs, and operational needs.
  9. Build out fundraising opportunities at both the league level and the club/student level.
  10. Expand community-driven events (social gatherings, workshops, pre-season events).
  11. Strengthen the fundraising model to support the low-cost Guiding Principle.

Student Experience & Inclusion

  1. Expand the gear-loan program to further reduce financial barriers.
  2. Explore structured coaching progression, skills clinics, and development camps.
  3. Explore formal student leadership pathways (captains’ council, mentorship teams, race crew, committees).
  4. Advance inclusivity initiatives and pursue partnerships with nonprofits such as Equal Slopes to broaden access for underrepresented or lower-budget athletes.
  5. Consider statewide events/end-of-season gatherings to build recognition and deepen community connection.
  6. Continue creating fundraising pathways that reduce participation barriers and maintain low program costs.

Longer-Term Growth Pathways

  1. Develop officiating certifications, coach-development programs, and multi-school mentorship networks.
  2. Build multi-year partnerships with resorts, outdoor brands, and community sponsors.
  3. Explore a program structure allowing for athlete development tiers (Varsity/JV/Development), similar to Utah MTB and other state high-school racing models.
  4. Plan for a 5–10 year statewide expansion (additional regions, more schools, stronger low-cost pathways, sustainable infrastructure).
